FULHAM EDGING CLOSER TO CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE

Fulham have already sealed their return to the Premier League at the first time of asking thanks to the managerial input of Portuguese tactician Marco Silva and they have the English Championship title in their sights ahead of their final four games.

The Cottagers were one of the three teams who suffered demotion from the Premier League to the English Championship at the end of last season alongside West Brom and Sheffield United and they have been able to return to the English top flight after one season in the Championship thanks in part to the goals of Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrovic. The former Newcastle United player took his tally to 40 goals in 40 English Championship games after netting twice in the first half to lead Fulham to a 3-0 victory over Preston North End on Tuesday. The Robins leveled proceedings through their top scorer Bobby Reid courtesy of a Josh Brownhill assist. The scoreline remain unchanged for the rest of the game. For Fulham, while they would have wanted to maintain their lead until the end, they will be pleased that their unbeaten run continued to 11 matches already. They are still hopeful of making the playoffs with the result as they sit on the fifth place while City maintain chase in sixth place.

Whilst tickets for the Playoffs aren’t quite as sought after as Champions League Final ones, according to Livefootballtickets, they are amongst the most in-demand in World Football. Hopefully Fulham will make it there, if they don’t manage to clinch an automatic promotion spot.

Lee Johnson willnot be as pleased with his team, which has recorded just a win this year. They recorded just one shot on target and wasted several other chances. Overall they would be contented though as the Slavisa Jokanovic led side could have done more damage.

“It was a different kind of game – very hard, but we tried to follow out style, move the ball but we didn’t find enough space. They pressed us and put us under a strong press. We had chances to win the game, and they had some too,” the Fulham boss said afterwards.

Fulham are four points behind Aston Villa, who are in third place and leading fourth placed Derby by a point. Bristol on the other hand are also in contention for a playoff spot, and are two points above nearest rivals Sheffield United.

Fulham sign Porto full-back Rafa Soares on loan

Championship club Fulham have secured the services of Porto left-back Rafa Soares on a season-long loan deal.

The 22-year-old, who has been capped by Portugal at the Under-21 level, spent the previous season on loan with Rio Ave. Soares is currently recuperating from a minor ankle problem, and this will keep him waiting for his debut until after the international break.

“I’m very happy. I came here to help the club achieve its goals this season and I hope to experience a lot and do a good job. I have ambitions to improve myself too, and help the club to have a good season. I had other options, other clubs were interested in me, but the way Fulham acted, I was decisive that I wanted to come here, and I think it’s the right time to be here.” he told the club’s official website.

Fulham ended the previous Championship campaign on a high as they crept past Leeds United into sixth place. However, they could not maintain their form against a stubborn Reading defence in the playoff semi-final where they lost out by a 1-0 aggregate scoreline.

The Cottagers have begun their new season in a relatively quiet fashion with no wins from their opening four games, and they will have to improve on their goal scoring in order to climb up the table in the coming weeks.

With the summer window closing in less than 10 days’ time, the Cottagers appear to have wrapped up most of their ,a href=”http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/41011256″>transfer business with Rui Fonte, Aboubakar Kamara, IbrahimaCisse, MarceloDjalo having joined on permanent deals whilst Tomas Kalas, SheyiOjo, Oliver Norwood and Soares will contribute their part in their season-long loan spells. Fulham host Bristol Rovers in the EFL Cup in midweek before they take on Ipswich Town, who have made the perfect start to the season with 12 points from four games.
